A private swimming pond in the garden naturally also requires regular maintenance. However, you can keep the maintenance effort relatively low if you take some precautions. We have listed the precautions for you here. If you take all these points to heart, the swimming pond care will be pleasant and particularly effective, so that you can fully enjoy the pleasure of swimming.
A tip in advance: Some specialized nurseries also offer professional maintenance of swimming ponds within their services, which also extends to the maintenance of all pond devices or should definitely also expand! So if you need help with maintenance, just contact the local nurseries.
Caring for the swimming pond properly
There are some rules that you should definitely follow if you have a swimming pond. If you adhere to these, you can keep the maintenance effort low from the outset.
- Do not contaminate the swimming pond yourself (e.g. by wearing cosmetics).
- Always shower before using the swimming pond.
- Avoid chemical fertilizers and the like in the pond.
- Always clear swimming pond of dead flowers, leaves and similar organic garden waste.
- Animals are prohibited from entering a swimming pond.
- Use nutrient-poor plant substrates when planting water pond plants.
- Use mineral nutrient binders to largely avoid algae.
➤ Remove dead plant shoots:
The swimming pond usually wakes up from its hibernation in early spring and it is time to do some thorough maintenance. This includes removing brown, partially dead plant shoots before the aquatic plants form fresh shoots. And the best thing to do now is to clean the bottom of the swimming pond with a special pond suction device (reading tip: sludge in the garden pond - instructions and tips for reducing sludge). The use of pond suction devices has the advantage that little dirt is whirled up and you can clean the pond thoroughly and relatively easily.
➤ Carry out water compensation / supply fresh water:
In individual cases, it is also necessary to carry out a water balance by adding fresh water to your swimming pond. This in turn is also important on extremely hot summer days when there is significant water loss in the swimming pond. Then you should also add fresh water to your pond.
➤ Plant care:
Furthermore, in spring you should also create a new bank area for your swimming pond or take good care of the existing plants (more about this here). Don't forget: piers, pond entrances and the like must also be maintained.
Only after this work should you use all overwintered pond devices in the swimming pond again.
Prepare for winter
➤ Free leaves / flower waste from the pond:
As soon as autumn comes, the bathing season is usually over, so you have to slowly prepare your pond for winter. Above all, the surface of the pond should be cleared of flower waste and leaves again and again from autumn. For this you should best use a leaf net.
Alternatively, you can also stretch a fine net over the pond surface. However, you have to empty this from time to time when there is a heavy leaf load. It is also important that you remove the leaf network in good time before the first snowfall!
➤ Cut back pond plants:
Furthermore, depending on the variety, you have to cut back the pond plants in the swimming pond significantly so that they do not produce any organic waste in the pond over the winter. You can also call this cut back a top cut. In particular, you should carefully process the strongly growing pond plants. Only hardy plant shoots such as Reeds can remain whole and ensure that the pond surface does not completely freeze over.
➤ Remove pond technology from the swimming pond:
As soon as frost temperatures are expected, you should remove all pond technology from the swimming pond, including the pond pump, a fountain system, light fixtures, etc. You should then thoroughly clean and dry the pond technology after removal and set it in a frost-free room over the winter months. During this time, you can now easily carry out any repairs and maintenance work on the devices.
